For Juan Antonio Madrid, director of the Chronobiology Laboratory at the University of Murcia (UMU), not sleeping well may be the reason behind many small day-to-day problems. For example, not getting a deep sleep sometimes results in body aches and pains. Other times it may cause loss of memory. And sometimes you become more susceptible to infections. Not sleeping enough can even aggravate diabetes, because the way your body metabolizes glucose depends on the quality of your sleep. This is all due to the fact that we live in an extremely competitive society, one in which we sleep little during the week and try to catch up on lost sleep over the weekend.
